Working From Home “Doesn’t Work” for Elon Musk–But It Does Work for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Tech

Just one week after taking over Twitter, Elon Musk eliminated nearly 1/2 of Twitter’s workforce and told the other 1/2 to come back to the office — reversing the remote work policy that had been in place since the pandemic.

He is implementing the same hustle work culture that he did at Tesla and SpaceX, but is building a social media platform the same as sending people to Space or getting us to move away from gas-powered cars? It’s a debatable topic — one for which I haven’t yet decided which side I’m on.

Regardless of how Elon chooses to run his companies, thankfully a remote flexible workforce will continue to be in the cards for the rest of the tech industry.

In the U.S., employees expect flexibility within their job as much as they expect a 401(k). Employers that don’t offer flexibility in when and where their teams work will see increased turnover as employees move to roles that offer value props that better align with their desires.

Simply put, it is table stakes for those looking to hire the best talent.
